Background of the Study
Political participation is a cornerstone of democratic governance, yet gender-related barriers continue to impede full engagement in many communities, including Akure South Local Government Area. Traditional perceptions and cultural stereotypes often restrict women's political involvement, creating a gender imbalance in political representation (Akinola, 2023). Recent studies between 2023 and 2025 have highlighted that structural and socio-cultural obstacles, such as patriarchal norms, limited access to resources, and inadequate support networks, contribute significantly to this phenomenon (Adedoyin, 2024). These barriers not only limit women's voices in political decision-making but also undermine the overall democratic process. The current political landscape reflects deep-rooted gender biases that hinder the participation of women and other marginalized groups (Oladele, 2025). This study aims to examine the extent and nature of these barriers, exploring how traditional norms, educational background, and socio-economic factors affect political participation. A comprehensive evaluation of both individual and institutional factors will contribute to understanding the multifaceted challenges and developing actionable recommendations.
Statement of the Problem
Despite formal efforts to democratize political processes, gender-related barriers persist in limiting political participation in Akure South (Akinola, 2023). Women's representation remains disproportionately low due to cultural, structural, and socio-economic constraints (Adedoyin, 2024). The persistent exclusion of women from political roles undermines the principles of equal representation and hampers effective governance (Oladele, 2025). This study seeks to investigate these barriers, exploring the underlying factors that restrict women's political involvement and to suggest reforms that could enhance inclusive political participation.
Objectives of the Study:
To identify the gender-related barriers hindering political participation in Akure South.
To assess the impact of socio-cultural and structural factors on women's political engagement.
To propose strategies for enhancing inclusive political participation.
Research Questions:
What gender-related barriers affect political participation in Akure South?
How do socio-cultural factors influence women's engagement in politics?
What reforms can promote greater inclusivity in political processes?
Research Hypotheses:
Gender significantly influences political participation levels in Akure South.
Cultural stereotypes negatively impact women's political engagement.
Enhanced support systems can improve women's participation in politics.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the persistent gender-related barriers to political participation in Akure South. The insights gained will inform policies aimed at promoting gender inclusivity and democratic governance. The findings are expected to support political reforms that empower women, contributing to more balanced representation and effective decision-making processes in the community.
